Camille is the French form of a Latin name, Camillus, that may have meant an attendant at a religious ceremony. In French, it is pronounced [kaˈmij], not /kəˈmɪl/ as in English. Indeed, the "ill" called the "l mouillé", is the French equivalent of the "gl", "ll" and "lh" from fellow Latin languages Italian, Spanish, Occitan, Catalan and Portuguese and is pronounced "y".
